I have always loved type and design.

As a child, sometimes I would work near my Dad at his drafting table. I was delighted if he gave me a sheet of letters called "Press Type". I would carefully burnish each letter onto a page of non-repro blue lines, trying to create a properly spaced word or sentence.

Some of the lettering tools that Dad used in early commercial art jobs, really intrigued me. “Wrico” Lettering Pens were a predecessor of Rotring -Rapidograph pens, with an open reservoir to hold the ink. You would pull the pen along, using even pressure, while leaning it against a raised ruler. Curved lines were inked using ellipse templates or a compass with a ruling pen attachment.

Creating a headline is a great deal easier today!

There are hundreds of font choices, stock photos /line art images, drawing tools and programs available to a designer online. Narrowing down the selection to help achieve a simple clean design is still the ultimate challenge for an artist and client. And the human eye is still the best judge of letter spacing so I say to everything - kern, kern, kern.
